Course Super Report

Firstly I would like to thank the members who have made me feel welcome during my first week. Hopefully in the coming months I will get to meet most members and I shall do my best to remember everyone's name. I'm really excited about my new position here at Bayview as I believe this course has so much potential. I would also like to thank the Bayview Brigade for their help on Monday as they have done a great job cleaning up the gardens around the 10th tee, in my experience I haven't seen such a large group of volunteer members getting involved which is fantastic.

The 11th green is making good progress after a few initial setbacks with weather and some minor hick ups locating the pre-existing underground services, the entire project will be finished by the June 30 deadline besides the installation of the new pathways. The green will be seeded on Monday 28th June and should take around 15 weeks pending growing conditions. We have decided to use Santa ana couch on the new 12th tees which I'm sure the members will find to be an improved playing surface, we have also chosen to trail a new grass Seaisle Paspalum for the collar around the green instead of the old Rye grass it is very similar to a couch without the invasive qualities. Therefore it can be mown shorter than the Rye grass which will result in a better playing surface.

As for the rest of the course I haven't seen much off it yet as we have been concentrating on the 11th green construction, however in the coming weeks the green staff will be endeavouring to improve the general housekeeping throughout the course, there will be some maintenance changes with the introduction of the following

  • Mown short rough
  • Short mown collar around the green
  • Increased green speed
  • Coloured flag 6 x front of green 6 x middle of green 6 x back of green
  • Greens being mown on Sundays
  • Bunkers being raked on Saturdays

Bayview Brigade

The course improvement programme of the Bayview Brigade took another step forward on Monday 21st when the 3 large garden beds adjacent to the 10th and 14th tees were weeded and fully mulched. New Course Super David Stone and Don made this task as easy as possible by delivering a staggering 20 full trailer loads of mulch to the site where it was spread by the member volunteers.

We were slightly down in numbers due to travel and illness for some of our regulars however the team worked flat out and achieved far more than we expected to. Thanks to Roger Smith, Bob Cadden, Steve Whitfield, Greg Attwood, John Shepheard and David Ryan who did a terrific job.

Course Super David Stone has enthusiastically embraced the concept and will coordinate the Brigade activities with our new coordinator Bob Cadden. Our aim is to maintain the gardens and other areas of the course so allowing David and his team to concentrate fully on bringing our course up to a standard we can be proud of.

The Brigade operates one Monday per month and we need several more members to join in if we can hope to achieve our goals. I can promise you a great sense of achievement, camaraderie and a gentle or rigorous workout depending on your own capabilities. Please contact Nigel Gibson or Bob Cadden on mobile 0414 469 646.

Suspension of Play

The club has purchased portable sirens to be used when alerting members to suspend play. Such a suspension of play may occur should the course be unplayable due to heavy rain or there is danger from lightning strikes.

Members are advised the sirens will be sounded for a five second period to alert players that play is suspended. Staff will take these sirens onto the course to alert players in areas not near the clubhouse.

When play is suspended players may complete the hole they are playing or mark the position of the ball and take shelter in the clubhouse. Please be advised a suspension of play does not mean play has been abandoned for the day. The match committee will advise players as to the resumption or cancellation of play dependant on the conditions.

If play resumes after a suspension those players that do not complete their round have 'no card returned' recorded against their name and are not eligible for a refund. Should play be suspended and not resume those players that did not complete their round will receive a refund on their competition fee and those with golf carts will receive a 50% refund on their cart fees. Depending on the percentage of players that have completed the round there may be prizes awarded to those who finished or the entire competition cancelled with a refund going to all players.

Mens' Golf Trip To Perth

As you may be aware BGC now has reciprocal rights with The Vines in Perth. This is a magnificent course consistently ranked amongst the best in Australia. We must thank BGC member Tim King for making this reciprocity possible.

A few weeks ago Rick Purslowe Men's captain at the Vines visited here and we agreed to hold an interclub competition between BGC and The Vines. This has now progressed to the stage where we have dates and approximate costs for accommodation.

DATES Depart Sydney for Perth Tuesday 19th October returning on Monday 25th.This will allow 2 games at The Vines and at least one other perhaps at Joondalup another great course near Perth. Plenty of opportunities also for enjoying Perth and its beautiful seafood, wines etc.

ACCOMMODATION. There is a choice of hotel or apartment style accommodation on the course at about $100 per night each with a separate bedroom.

A competition will be arranged against The Vines and they will put on a Presentation Dinner.

We need to obtain expressions of interest so we can advise The Vines of possible numbers. Please email me on boborth@sydney.net or call 0413 439 469 if you intend joining what will be a terrific golfing experience.
